One truth or many truths? 12 points for about 270 words (that’s the number of words on this assignment sheet!) Objective reality: The truth existing independently of persons and their perception. Subjective reality: The views each person, or “subject,” has on what is true and real. Answer questions 1 and 2 briefly; 3 and 4 require greater explanation. • 1) Identify something you believe to be true which others around you commonly believe. Do you believe it merely because others do? • 2) Identify something which most people around you believe, but you do not. Why do you think they believe such a thing, and why do you not? • 3) Are you right, while they’re wrong? Or: do you believe everyone has their own truth, and it’s just as good as any other? Do you see a problem with that? • 4) Think back to our class discussion, and review the “Postmodern Theory” section near the end of the textbook’s Chapter 1. Then choose any of these to discuss: • • Is Baudrillard correct about the “dissolution of life into TV” (by TV, he of course means media in general)? Explain why or why not? • Why is it good to know objective reality (like what really happened in history, or how the world and society actually operates)? • How much conformity in belief should we expect or encourage in a free society? Discuss an example to demonstrate your view. • What role should science play in defining our sense of reality? When must we respect or defer to scientific “experts” in any particular field?
