Time Management in Chaos You’ve probably heard the common phrase, ”I just don’t have enough time.” You may even have said it yourself. In a typical 24 hour period, you’re likely to spend 16 hours awake, including eight hours at work and two commuting. Basically, your total work time is only half of your time spent awake. But doesn’t it seem like it’s a lot more than that? Worse, when you get home, you may find it very difficult to turn work off. The result is that, emotionally, it feels like you’re always working. I have three children, and just like you, I have many things to do and little time to do them in. I want my time at work to be productive, and my time at home to be enjoyable. Time management is traditionally considered a management discipline, but you can’t do a better job at it by extending how much time you have. We all have our 24 hours, and that’s it. So here are some facts to keep in mind about time management: • It’s not really a problem of time management; it’s a combination of self management, choice management, activity management, and value management. • What matters is what you do with the time you’re allotted.
