Ethical Challenges in System topic Issues in the Human Services: These are just some options I brainstormed – in every human service field there are ethical policy challenges! You are welcome to use one of the below or come up with your own. Just make sure it is a policy challenge. Poverty: Challenges in family assistance programs such as TANF Homelessness: Policy and Resource Inequities Homelessness: Shelter policies around sobriety versus harm reduction Child Welfare: High overlap between neglect and removal, especially for BIPOC families Child Welfare: Honoring the key components of the Indian Child Welfare Act Child foster care system – balancing family preservation with permanency needs Child foster care system – Lack of trauma informed training for foster parents Criminal Justice system: Use of solitary confinement Juvenile Justice system: The reliance on punitive measures versus prevention/early intervention Juvenile Justice: Adolescents tried as adults and sent to adult prisons, especially for BIPIC teens Special Education: Autism and ABA interventions Crisis Intervention: Mobile crisis units (such as Cahoots) and Police-Community partnerships Mental Health: Self-diagnosis and Identity in diagnosis Mental Health: Mandatory counseling Mental Health: Decolonizing mental health within an evidence-based system Addiction: Necessary professional credentials Elder care facilities: LGBTQ elders and system management Hospice: Client autonomy, shared decision making and system management Refugee Family Services and US asylum procedures Ethical Policy Analysis Paper (50 points) In 6-8 double-spaced pages (not including title page and references), using 12-pt Times New Roman font with 1” margin on all sides, analyze a specific ethical conflict within a human service policy area and evaluate a current ethical intervention/policy challenge in the field of the human services. An APA-formatted title page and reference page (a minimum of 5-8 references) is required. A list of these challenges can be found on Canvas. If you have another ethical challenge you want to analyze that not on the list, please reach out to the instructor to get permission. Specifically, this paper should cover: • • • • • Introduction 1. The reason you chose this specific ethical intervention/policy challenge 2. A summary the intervention/policy and the challenge it present, referencing at least two academic sources Ethics: A summary of and comparison of the specific ethics codes that are most relevant in your analysis of this ethical challenge. Must use the NOHS ethics code and then either NASW or APHA 1. Values: A reflection of the intersection of your personal values, values of social justice and cultural responses, and possible client values in consideration of this challenge. Evaluation of the intersection between ethics, evidence and values summarized above. This includes a thorough evaluation of the ethical conflicts presented by this challenge, referring to and exploring the interaction between specific NOHS ethical codes, empirical evidence from the literature, your personal values and the values of social justice and cultural responsiveness.
